PHILOSOPHY
Literature consists of imaginative tales and poems, works of fiction and non-fiction, stories about the world as we see it and the world as we wish it could be. Literature often reveals what is most beautiful about the human spirit, but it can also reflect human depravity, both in our cruelty to each other and in the way we often fail to live up to our own ideals.
The inclusion of any work of literature or critical approach on this site is not an endorsement of its worldview or its treatment of any one moral issue. Rather, this space presents what is there—works that have been recognized throughout history as achievements of their time and place. We include them so that we can understand the people who passed them down to us: their hopes and fears, aspirations and frustrations. By understanding them, we can better understand ourselves.
